Favorite Openings in Anime
I haven’t posted in over a month, and I’ve wanted to do a post like this for a while. I am going to post my favorite anime openings in no particular order. Now, a favorite opening isn’t just a good song or cool animation, but a combination of the two. I think, personally, what makes a really great anime opening is one that, if you watch it alone, without the show following (IE on youtube or something), it should bring you back to the anime itself. A great song for an opener should be able to arouse the feelings you felt and have associated with the show, and bring up some of the complex emotions. The video aspect of a great opening should. remind you of what you felt for specific characters and specific scenes that really struck you. Put these effects together by watching the complete opening, and hearing it, and you should feel as if you went through the show itself. So, for whoever is interested in watching a batch of anime openings (nostalgia guaranteed) or maybe have heard of one of these shows and want to check out more about it, have at it!
Samurai Champloo – Battlecry by Shing02 and Nujabes
A Great song by Nujabes (who will never be forgotten) and Shing02. Awesome and stylistic visuals that help display the tone of the entire series. A modern day classic.
Gurren Lagann – Sorairo Days by Shoko Nakagawa
An energetic song that’s pared with the wonderful visuals and characters of Gurren Lagann, this opening pumps me up so much…
Full Metal Alchemist – Rewrite by Asian Kung Fu Generation
Now, this one breaks the rule a little bit. The song is more powerful than the animation. The song alone can and will always bring me back to the show, in a way not many songs do. The video kicks in about half way through and starts being awesome then.
Bleach – Asterisk by Orange Range
Now, this may come as a surprise to some of you, considering my passionate disdain for bleach, but this opening *always* been one of my favorites. I loved it ever since I first saw it. I loved bleach, and I still love pre-soul society bleach (the first 6 volumes, and the first season of the show). I think Bleach could have become something unique and amazing, and unfortunately it chose not to. Anyway, this opening en captures EVERYTHING that was cool about Bleach. What got me hooked onto watching the damn show when I was 13. Unfortunately, it didn’t last. Also, it’s a shame what Orange Range did with the full version of this song.
Tenchi Universe – I don’t know the name of the song nor who sings it.
Let’s not kid ourselves. Tenchi is a really bad show, and some of iterations are mildly horrific. This being said, Tenchi is incredibly nostalgic for anyone who grew up in the Toonami generation. This specific opening will *always* bring me back. Always. To a really shitty show.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya – Bouken Deshou Deshou by Aya Hirano
Haruhi has some great songs and fantastic animation, but, unfortunately, most people will remember it’s ending, Hare Hare Yukai, in that respect over everything else. God Knows… is the best Haruhi song in my opinion but that doesn’t stop Bouken Deshou Deshou from being a fantastic opener.
Toradora! – Pre-Parade by Rie Kugimiya
A really fun opening for an extremely fun (and brilliant) show. It also succeeds in capturing the warmth and quirks of each character!
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Along Complex 2nd Gig – Rise by Origa (and Yoko Kanno)
A lot of people like the opening to the first show more, what with it’s spiffy THREE DEE graphics, but I always thought the animation for 2nd gig’s opener and the song were a perfect fit for the series, and more specifically, section 9. I really love this. I really love all of these though.
Serial Experiments Lain – Duvet by Boa (but not BoA)
Absolute perfection. Nothing else needs to be said.
Paranoia Agent – Yume no Shima Shinen Kouen by Susumu Hirasawa
One of the most unique openings out there. I also don’t really need to say more than that with this one.
Azumanga Daioh – Soramimi Cake by Oranges and Lemons
LU LA LU LA PIANO WA SEKAI NO YUME SAKU KOYOI NO MERODII
Last Exile – Cloud Age Symphony by Shuntaro Okino
This opening is another one of my absolute favorites, ever since I saw it as part of Geneon’s previews on their Haibane Renmei discs back in 2003. This opening does a beautiful job of conveying the grandness of this under-rated and fantastic series.
Code Geass – Kaidoku Funou by Jinn
JIBUN WO is the more popular and remembered opening, but I thought the second opening was really fantastic. Both the song and the stronger video presentation make it an unforgettable part of Geass for me.
Honey and Clover – Dramatic by Yuki
This is a really interesting opening. Some live action, some not, some art, some video… You really need to know the show to fully appreciate it, but it’s freakin’ great.
Well that’s it… I guess… I mean… I’m not forgetting any am I…
WHAM, Cruel Angel Thesis, Neon Genesis Evangelion. This. This this this this this.
I wonder if anyone actually will watch all of these videos. Please do! Thanks for reading!
